Calypso Batch 447 - The Enigma
As you may know, each batch of our core-range Berliner Weisse 'Calypso' is dry-hopped differently. The back of each bottle directs drinkers to our website, where you can match up the batch number on the label to which hops were used. For Batch 447 we're trying something slightly different and venturing away from the USA to an Australian variety recommended to us by Simply Hops - Enigma. The name of this hop comes from its complicated nature. Records suggest that the crop is a descendant of the Swiss Tettnang hop, but it grows like a North American hop and has a character far removed from its heritage. This variety is a result of the in-house breeding program at Hop Products Australia, who say this about their creation:
"Typical descriptors don’t work very well for Enigma™. Our formal tasting sessions have given us interesting terms like ‘Pinot Gris’, ‘raspberries’, and ‘redcurrant’, through to rock melon and light tropical fruit. We don’t feel that any of these are really adequate, but we do know that the flavours and aromas are irresistibly appealing!"
We're very excited about how Enigma is shaping our tart, spritzy enchantress this time round. Dry hopping Calypso has always been about adding a rounded, fruity balance and aroma to the beer, early signs are that this could be the best batch yet. As always, we'd love to hear your tasting notes when the new batch goes out in the next week or so, and indeed how you think this compares to previous batches.
