Meet the Soundwave Mashups

Introducing our two new Soundwave mashups! We've collaborated with brewing icons Verdant and Pressure Drop on these special releases that blend our classic IPA, Soundwave, with two larger than life beers from these collaborating breweries.

A Little About Soundwave

Soundwave has been a key part of Siren since day one. Back in 2013 you couldn’t be considered a new wave brewery if you didn’t have something hop forward, bursting with tropical juiciness and some prominent bitterness to let you know you were drinking a beer with a bit of attitude. It’s been a key part of our range ever since.

Coming in at 5.6%, Soundwave started life with American West Coast inspiration, though there has always been minimal malt complexity. Instead, Soundwave has always been our ‘Hop Vehicle’ - packed to the brim with punchy, oil-laden hops.

We expect Soundwave to have a good body at 5.6%, with a mouthfeel leaning towards the soft and smooth end of the spectrum, further helping the tropical and citrus fruit flavours on the palate. Soundwave has to finish with a resinous lick of bitterness - the epitome of an IPA.

Soundwave Innovation

Recently it’s become the perfect basis for some fun and creativity. Beers like Soundwave: Nectaron (available in Sainsbury’s), Superdelic Soundwave (available in ASDA) and low-alc Soundwave 0.5 have been among our top sellers this year. These beers are a great mix of the always-reliable old friend, and the feeling of trying something new.

But today, we’re writing about two new collaborations that take Soundwave one step further– Soundwave Mashups! In a move not seen since the halcyon craft beer era of ‘Rule of Thirds’, we’ve been sharing recipes, processes, ingredients and ideas with two of the best in the business. So here are two brand new Soundwave iterations, both taking us in different directions.

Oh, and for good measure, grab yourself a Soundwave IPA in 440ml for the first time ever at the same time!

Siren Soundwave IPA x Pressure Drop Pale Fire = Pale Fire Soundwave - 4.8% Pale Ale
Hops: Simcoe, Mosaic, Citra, Columbus

Pale Fire is the flagship pale ale of Pressure Drop brewery. Its journey began in the summer of 2012, when founders Graham O’Brien, Sam Smith, and Ben Freeman started experimenting with recipes in a garden shed in Hackney, London. Among their earliest creations was Pale Fire, a beer that would go on to define their brand, after more than 20 experimental batches!

After refining their recipes, the team opened a five-barrel brewery in Hackney. Their American-influenced pale ales quickly attracted attention, and Pressure Drop was soon named one of the top new breweries by RateBeer. Pale Fire was still a beer synonymous with the brewery, donning taps all across London, when they made the next big jump into a larger 20-barrel facility and tap room in Tottenham Hale in 2017.

Both Pale Fire and Soundwave began life in 2013, when the American influence on UK brewers was pushing prominent bitterness with marmaladey, citrus-forward and resinous hop profiles. Both of these beers have evolved delicately since then. They’ve grown and matured with our breweries, while being part of the fabric of them.

We admire greatly how Pale Fire has stayed relevant and exciting without losing its original identity. Revered by customers for its consistency and reliable flavours, it has remained a go-to beer for many, along with being an excellent introduction to new drinkers into craft beer.

It’s a perfect mashup, with plenty of common ground to build from, not only in story but in recipe, then a touch of magic to elevate the collaboration. Expect a clean, fresh pale ale. Perfect by the pint, full of nuanced flavour, with a nod to the piney, resinous roots that make these beers timelessly drinkable.

Siren Soundwave IPA x Verdant Neal Gets Things Done = Neal Gets Soundwave - 6.5% Hazy IPA
Hops: Simcoe, Nelson Sauvin, Citra

Neal Gets Things Done is one of our favourite ever Verdant IPAs - and there are plenty of delicious options to choose from! It was born from one of their first ever ‘beer series’, using the same hops in three different strength beers, all inspired by Beat Generation writers. Head Brewer James Heffron explains:

The Beat Generation stories were all pretty seminal to me in my formative years, oozing a freedom and dexterity both in how they were written and the characters they portrayed (whether real or fictional). They are still fresh as a daisy and often so squarely at odds with the world we live in. They look at and describe life from a leftfield stance, often appearing to blow preconceptions wide open. That resonates personally and also wholeheartedly in terms of Verdant.

Both Soundwave and Neal share some amounts of Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic, but Nelson Sauvin is a new addition that adds a different dimension of gooseberry to the mashup. We’re able to lean into the tropical fruit side of Soundwave and its more modern side, with a full, soft body. The malt base layers in depth of flavour and a touch of colour. The result is a hazy, golden pour with intense aromas of ripe mango, caramelised pineapple, orange peel and a touch of Soundwave piney-ness.
